: : COULD SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME?! I HAVE TO DO A LINE FOR LINE EXPLICATION OF SONNET 73, FOR MY COLLEGE CL BY THIS WEEK AND I AM LOST. THANK YOU LIZ
: this sonnet was concerning the thought of death. through shakespeare's use of metaphors and imagery, he conveys the changes one undergoes in life. this was one of shakespeare's first sonnets to show his interest in the ultimate mortality of man. although some believe that the sonnet was written when he was only 36, death was nonetheless on his mind.

The first quatrain represents Fall, the second quatrain represents the ending of a day, "twilight", and the third quatrain is the burning out of a fire. The three quatrains are metaphors for death in that they are nearing an end. Fall is near the end of a year, twilight is at the end of a day, and the glowing embers are at the end of a fire. The couplet can be explained as the feeling you get when you realize that you are about to loose someone. He is saying that his friend knows of his imminent demise and it makes him love him more deeply, to not want to take him for granted.
