: What is meant by action at a distance?
My understanding of this is as follows: Philosophers have said that because of cause and effect, something cannot be caused usless there is some kind of contact with the thing acted upon. Therefore, action over a distance, such as gravity acting on a planet over a vast distance is very hard to explain philosophically. Quantum physics however is finding that certain pairs of particles seem to be "aware" of one another in the sense that when something is done to one, the other one also responds at the same time, even if they are separated by a large distance. I'm not an expert in this topic, but I thought that this explanation might help.
