Part of it is that Islam is more designed for extremism than Hinduism. Muhammed himself defended it with the sword, his actions were entirely justified (Muslims were being persecuted) but it has had some ill effects. Islam openly tolerates war, usually for all the right reasons, but not always.

In addition, the Middle East is in a downturn, they (they being most Arabs) are dealing with corrupt governments, and a lack of cash (the oil money does not get to most Arabs). When times get tough, people tend to get more involved in ideologies and/or religions. Has this led to a disproprotunate number of fanatics in Islam? Yes. Is fanaticism the core of Islam? No. Would the Prophet throw a fit if he saw what some people were doing to Muslims and what some Muslims were doing to other poeple? Depends on his temprament, but he would be ticked off.
