Hi,
I'm doing a paper on religion that will focus on ideas of conversion and missionary work. I've read that according to orthodox Brahminical thought that Hinduism is limited to those living in or from "tha land of the Veda." I've also heard from a Hindu friend that she had always just thought that Hinduism is limited to Indians, although she could not tell me why. I know that the issue of conversion and what qualifies conversion is different for different people of different religions. i am aware that not all Hindus think that Hinduism is limited to Indians, and have done some research regarding Hindu missionary missionary movements of the 19th and 20th century. What i am wondering about is the reason or foundation of what seems to be an earlier belief that Hinduism is limited to India. Is there any basis in this in Hindu scripture? I have heard that Hinduism needs to be practiced in India due to te structure of the caste system and its relation to the fulfillment of one's dharma, as well as religious sites in India, such as teh Ganges. Any suggestions?
