Political philosophers disagree about the
prerequisites for an effectively functioning
democracy. Some claim a literate electorate is the only requirement. Others deny that this is a requirement but offer other ideas, or deny it is the sole requirement.
Consider the thesis that in order for a democracy to function effectively, a significant majority of the electorate must possess: 1) sufficient intellectual prowess to be able to resolve the truth of competing claims, and 2) sufficient ethical maturity to judge rightly what ought be sought in the political sphere.
