This may or may not be of any help to you, but i am a sophomore at Ankeny High school in Iowa who is studying this poem in school. From what i have studied, i have gathered that the significance of the title to the story is the main meaning of the poem. The meeting is of course one at night, and the poem is telling about the journey to the meeting by one of the two people. The "story" of the poem progresses as the person is on a boat, riding to shore, beaching his boat, then walking along the beach and through the fields to get to the meeting place. (on the farm.) The first stanza tells of the person's midnight boat ride, and the line "quench its speed i'the slushy sand" is talking about the beaching of the boat. THe second stanza tell's of the journeyer's continuation on foot, and the actual meeting. I hope this is of help. :)
