Hello, Sarah! My name is Krista Kukowski and I'm from Greenville Illnois. I am a junior and for my advanced english 3 cl, we read the poem, "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening." My teacher told us his opinion on the story. He believes it has to do with suicide. He thinks that from the line, "The woods are lovely dark and deep" Also the line about a "My little horse must think it queer to stop with out a farmhouse near" So when we had to do a persuasive paper for our cl over any poem this year (2000 Fall) I chose this poem. I disagree with my teacher and believe that it has to do with a man who has a busy life and stops to look at the beauty of nature. I can explain this by the line, My little horse must think it queer......." The horse is simply wanting to get out of the cold. of course he thinks it queer to stop...it's cold and they've stopped and it is the darkest day of the year! Also the line, But i have promises to keep, and miles to go before i sleep," refers to that he has promises to keep to other people which proves he is a busy man since it is late and he still has miles to go and it is cold outside. The horses' fear, shows that the horse is not use to the man stopping and that he has noticed. I hope I have helped you out. I suppose that we will never fully realize the intent of this poem by Frost. He never explained the poem, i suppose he wanted us to think for ourselves what it meant and have our own meaning. Nobody will ever know the true meaning of it until we ask Frost himself! I think the lesson here though is, Never be too busy to not stop and look around you at the world God has created. The serenity and power you find there will last forever. Krista
