The Poetry Center of Chicago PRESENTS
BUKOWSKI: BORN INTO THIS
MOVIE SCREENING
On October 11, 2004, at 6:30 pm. The Poetry Center of Chicago will present Bukowski: Born Into This (Magnolia 2004) at the Ballroom of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, 112 South Michigan Avenue. The Poetry Center will be only the 16th venue to show the film, and the first arts organization to feature the picture in its programming. The film has been drawing large audiences to its screenings; one theater reports over 1,600 attended during just one week.
Bukowski: Born Into This is the first complete doc-umentary of Charles Bukowski (1920-1994). The film moves through the extraordinary experiences which shaped this writer’s world— from an abusive childhood; through years working as postal employee; and his eventual success as poet, novelist and cult icon. Bukowski’s readers know the man for his honest depiction of dailiness, and his resolve to illuminate the seedy, the dirty and the foulmouthed lowlifes.
Director John Dullagan spent seven years researching and shooting the film, which draws from interviews with relatives, neighbors, youth pals, fellow post office workers, girlfriend and other poets as well as better-known friends such as Bono, Sean Penn and Harry Dean Stanton.
In the last three decades, The Poetry Center’s Reading Series has presented many of the world’s best-known poets and writers, including: John Ashbery, Margaret Atwood, Joseph Brodsky, Gwendolyn Brooks, William Burroughs, Ana Castillo, Billy Collins, Billy Corgan, Rita Dove, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Carlos Fuentes, Allen Ginsberg, Jorie Graham, David Mamet, Czeslaw Milosz, N. Scott Momady, Gloria Naylor, Derek Walcott, and hundreds of others. Last year, the Poetry Center featured a reading by former Smashing Pumpkin Billy Corgan and an event which joined the talents of singer/songwriter Lucinda Williams with her father, poet Miller Williams.
