To me it's pretty obvious... I'm a student of philosophy at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. I study philosophy and gain quite a lot of understanding on different aspects of human life.
If this understanding were limited to myself and never shared with the common public, then I am wasting (1) the resources of society (in Denmark we are paid to study at the University - and of course other than 'student wages' the insitute itself costs much money each year) and (2) my own time; to learn philosophy merely for the sake oneself seems both selfish and in some ways rediculous - am I learning philosophy to discuss it with myself? Dialogue (also the philosophical kind) is a (at least) two-person game...
Besides, some might even say that you have an ethical responsibility to 'free the prisoners'... understanding increases freedom, freedom is an intrinsic value, hence one should indulge all kinds of understanding in general...
