I believe in the actual written work of the Cave Allegory he supposes it would be the ping of the soul into the next life. My memory is a little vague though.
: So the shadows are the illusory world of sensory perception, and the objects casting the shadows are the Forms. Plato believed that one could not turn to apprehend the Forms(Austin). Then would'nt it be more accurate if the prisoner could never be unchained, and could only infer the forms from their instances in reality, i.e. the shadows? is leaving the cave a representation of the dialectical method, or recollection, or dying and outright perceiving the forms?
