All our questions like "Why" or "What is the motive" or notions and compliance or non-compliance thereof - are all in the domain of ignorance. The fundamental question as you rightly say, will always remain so long as we approach the reality of our own existence as to what it really "is", using our mind. In the backdrop of our own true identity, a virtual reality programme suddenly crops up from nowhere, owing to the mind. No one knows what "mind" is or where is it located and when it came into being. If every single cell in the body can heal and regulate itself, does it not mean that the intelligent principle is permeating through every single cell as if mind is everywhere. Until now not a single neuro surgeon has been able to pinpoint the process center inside our brain.
Instead of asking "why" and "how" , one may ask "why not" and go ahead and may deal with it in the "absence" of the mind (i.e.,in the stillness of the mind).Only then one may glimpse the truth about his/her own true identity which is the witnessing intelligent principle behind everything and what happens in the virtual reality programme would no longer matter and all doubts and questions, the questioner and the observer and the observed would all disappear simultaneously as darkeness vanishes when light is brought in.
Ignorance is bliss in a way. If I don't mind my state of slumber and get involved with the dreams and the virual appearances and disappearances and events, well, I may continue for ever. Only if I don't want to get up I may ask "why must I get up" and continue to be in a state of blissful or painful ignorance.
On the other hand if I happen to wake up and the reality dawning upon me would silence my mind and even the dreams as well. Desiring or dreaming about getting up is NOT the same as getting up.
The right question may therefore be "to whom these questions like 'what is the motive',etc..arise" rather than the infinite questions themselves.
Blind compliance and stubborn non-complince, both, are like the two sides of the same coin "ignorance". There is no head nor tail and not even a coin. just looking at the reality of the background is what enlightenment is about. It is the natural state and the only reality, as the awakened put it and nothing need be done as nothing is to be achieved. Only the non-facts are to be comprehended as non-facts When this hapens they all disappear one by one and what may remain ultimately would be the FACT or TRUTH.
As thoughts are like seeds of action one may inquire any thought or emotion or question and go to the root of it and know it firsthand. Descriptions of sugar will not make the child understand as what "sweetness" means, until sugar is put on the tongue. Subsequently, just seeing sugar the mouth may water in the same child. Before he/she knows, just the word 'sugar' may trigger such a response from the same child! We adults are all somewhat like that and live on in the domain of what is known to the human mind. Mind and what 'is' are mutually exclusive.
