i found an excellent guide to the pre-socratics to be McKirahan's Philosophy Before Socrates.
McKirahan accuratly deciphers the writings of Heraus on the logos, fire as the arche, justice driving the cycle of opposites, etc. he even does well with the river metaphor... check it out if you're still outraged by literature on the pre-socratics.
