it is true that freedom is the essence of Hegel's view of spirit. Such is the opinion of all german idealists, Kants transcendental idealism to begin with. But to understand the specific nature of Hegels thoughts on freedom one should understand that he unifies substance with subject....in simple language...being is fundamentally self-movement...and freedom equals according to Hegel the understanding of necessity (that he took from spinoza). We are all determined by certain necessities, lets say: unavoidable laws of nature...freedom exists therein, that we come to understand this necessity and turn the determination around. E.g. we are determined by gravity...but once we understand how it determines us, we can device means of overcoming it...such is the actual nature of Hegels (sometimes very darkly expressed) view on freedom...it is a dialectical view in which determinations change into their opposite...greetings Peter
