I agree with Andrew. Further more a good symbol doesn't symbolize one thing in particular, it symbolizes everything. Saying that the sun in The Stranger symbolizes God is like saying that the picture on Gregor's wall in the Metamorphosis symbolizes his hope and desire. It could be true, but it is really so much more than we can say. If we could say "the sun symbolizes God" accurately, what makes us think that Camus wouldn't have just cut to the chase and done it himself? Symbols are used because there aren't words or ways to say the idea that they symbolize. Whatever you say about a symbol can only be an approximation of what actually means.
