I don't know what type of float tube you have, but i have finally put my motor on my Waterskeeter backpaker kickboat. In order to get around the extreme weight of a trolling battery, I went with a pair of 20AH 12V scooter batteries (eBay). I tested them today and didn't have to Switch to the 2nd battery until I wanted to go back to the launch (2 mi). The batteries weigh 6lbs each. I am running a Motorguide 30lb motor and the thing hauls @ss. I would recommend NOT running at full speed, due to battery drainage and the lovely hydrodynamics of any and all inflatable boats.
As for shortening the shaft, make sure that you leave plenty of room between your prop and the bottom of the tube (i.e. at least a foot!). If you cut it too short, you will have a damned hard time steering it, and if your line somehow gets behind the boat it will be more likely to wrap up in the prop.
Good luck and feel free to email me with any questions.
: Hi all,
: Need some advice on trolling motors. I plan to mount one to my float tube. Are there any out there that will run on a single 6v source? I plan to shorten the length of the shaft to accomodate the lower water level of the tube vs. a boat. I need to have it as light as possible for obvious reasons. Thanks for the help.
