Lay down your tomes and get out into the great outdoors! Last month I hiked, with a friend, in the glorious Canadian Rockies - Jasper and Yoho National Parks. We completed a 5-day loop up to Lake Brazeau. Saw elk, deer, bighorn sheep, grizzly bear, harlequin ducks and mountain goat (really a type of antelope). Long treks through blooming alpine meadows were rewarded with congenial company around the evening's campfire, or the burbling music of the downrushing creek. I found, though, that such treks are enhanced by bringing along one good read. My friend, a Seattlite, chose Timothy Egan and V.S. Naipul, while I picked up an interesting history called Park Prisoners, an "untold" story of the forced labor that built many of Canada's national parks between 1920-1950. I recommend making a relevant selection that will enhance what you are experiencing. (Example, when I went to Baxter State Park (ME) years ago I brough along Thoreau's The Maine Woods, and felt grateful I wasn't sleeping on a pile of damp balsam firs boughs covered by one sopping wool blanket! Missed the native guides, though!).
