Philosophy is not a study of what, but a study of why. It does not apply to science at all. However, a purely materialistic view accomplishes very little. Without some form of philosophy (personal, not formalized), we would have no reason to do good or anything other than simply survive.
Also, philosophy speculates on things not yet in science. Physics and psychology started in philosophy, as did astronomy, biology, and higher mathematics. Eventually we may even discover why the platypus (not why it is anything, just why it is).
