Well read students must know Sophocles (Oedipus and Antigone), the Bible, Shakespeare (Macbeth, Henry IV, The Tempest, and several tragedies--Hamlet or Othello or King Lear), a major Victorian novel (Jane Eyre), and principal American writers (Emerson, Thoreau, Whitman, Twain, Dickinson, [Kate] Chopin, Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Frost, [T. S.] Eliot, [Wallace] Stevens, Morrison) at a very minimum.
