I am now in Book XII of The City of God and am dealing with nature and will. Chapter 6 concludes: "how can it come to p that a nature, good though mutable, should produce any evil - that is to say, should make the will itself wicked?"
Human nature has become increasingly complex since the beginning of COG. First, it was body and soul. Then mind and understanding were added. Later still, spirit and will. Though these may be legitimate emendations to soul, little theoretical support is presented in preparation for invoking them.
Was Freud's early model of human nature (id, ego, super ego) in any way a reaction to the complexities of "Christian" psychology (soul science)?
