The Catcher in the Rye has been banned in many high schools because too many bored and angry parents are "offended" by the "f-word" (go figure a censorship warning appeared when I tried to post the actual word) which appears multiple times throughout the book, in addition to other profanities. These parents are upset that schools would force their children to read this "smut" and in true liberal fashion, they protested until the book was removed from the cirriculum. The book was written by J.D. Salinger in 1951 and has been surrounded by controversy ever since. I think, but I'm not sure, that the first example of suppresion came about in circa 1957 with someone trying to remove the book from school libraries. And ever since then this incredible work of art has been shut down, and completely neglected when it should be embraced. E-mail me with any other questions.
