THe best way to mark the begining of the war striken century is the gloomy insight of Kafka. The use of symbolic patterns is at a maximum when Herr. K chooses women as his only dependable defense stratergy, only to fail at the end. Even the hight of the places where things take place seem to have a meaning, with the court in the attic etc. For me it represents a the anguish of the modern man confronted by the anonymous individuality of the world. IT is too simplistic to state that Herr K. does not take his situation serious, rather in confusion he tends to adapt a differnt stratergy for his difence.
