The trial is probably my favorite Kafka novel, but it is clearly not finished. Although it has an ending unlike his two other novels it is clear from the way the narrative doesn't build as much as it could before the climax comes.
I think people's insisistence on focusing on Kafka's novels shows the way people are trained to regard litterature as a series of great works. We are taught that the short stories lead up to the novels, etc. Kafka's most satisfying works are his short stories but these are ignored in favor of his longer novels which at best are half-finished.
You can see the end in two ways, on the one hand K. has wasted his life by not taking the trial, seriously initially at first and has realized to late the seriousness of his situation, on the other hand could K. have changed anything by his actions?
