: The first thing that you probably should know is that Faulkner wrote the first and second chapters in stream of conscienceness(sorry for the spelling). He neglected time as the character Benji would do as a mentally retarded person. Every time you see italics he is jumping to a past memory or the present. However he does not do this everytime he "memory leaps". Quentin section is done in stream of conscienceness as well but somewhat differently.The chapters that follow Benji's (earlier Maury) are used to explain and further elaborate the story. The hitting at the beginning of the chapter is golf.
