Eric; Pardon the reply being put into your own post. I too like Purcell, especially his funeral work "The death of Queen Mary." Actually, I prefer Byrd for Church music, but I think that Purcell was the last truly great English Choral music composer.
Gave the tenors a lot of work I suppose!
Have you heard the vocal solo female aria on
Villa Lobo's recording? Sort of a haunting lullaby. I find it enchanting music, though the
work in general didn't much please me.
