: Could someone please explain to me HOW and WHY the battles at Midway, Stalingrad, and El Alamein are considered to be major turing points of the war. What led up to them and why? I thank anyone in advance who replies. My Email is Brownman76@aol.com
: Dennis Midway was a major turning point in the Pacific Theater of Operations because it broke the Back of Japanese Naval Aviation. Japanese shipyards and flight schools were never able to make up for the loss of those four carriers and their pilots.
As for Stalingrad it was a backbreaker for the German Wehrmacht as they lost almost 600,000 men, again a loss that Germany never recovered from.
I would not consider El Alamein as a major turning point so much as a major relief for Winston Chuchill and the English. In this battle Gen. Montgomery was able to turn back the Afrika Corps and ensured that the Suez C remained under English control, however this battle did lead to the final destruction of all German forces in N. Africa about a year later, another 300 - 350,000 men Germany couldnt afford to lose.
