I was reading the Atlantic Monthly's article about the Green Zone in Iraq and was reminded of a Playboy interview from the early 1970's with Lt. Herbert. In it he talked about the opulence of some of the places the U.S. military supported, while a small percentage of troops did the majority of fighting in Viet Nam. I was a 12-14 year old kid when I read the article, but it was shocking, nonetheless. Trying to unsuccessfully find it, I read the postings on this site, and learned more about Lt. Herbert than I had known.
It's ironic that Lt. Herbert went from the most decorated soldier in the Korean War to someone trying to warn America that there were terrible war crimes being committed in Viet Nam. Doesn't that sound like Kerry? And, like Kerry, Herbert was pilloried for saying it.
What I have to say next will certainly not seem to connect; however, I believe in a God consciousness. It's so nice to see God transcend the problems of this world; in a like manner, as the other respondent said, it's so nice to see people like Lt. Herbert who operate in the same world as a lot of bad people do.
