The United States lost in Vietnam because we were fighting in a rather idiotic method. This is not to say that the individual soldiers were stupid, rather the strategy was guided by people who knew everything about politics and economics, and nothing howsoever about practical warfare.
First, the US fought what is called a war of attrition, which essentially consists solely of defensive tactics. The necessary methods of cutting supply lines inside enemy lines, and pushing back enemy territory were ignored. In addition to that, the basis of a war of attrition is to kill a sufficent number of enemy soldiers as to make further attack impossible or impractical. Killing that many people, when the enemy is supported by China, is impossible.
In addition to that, the US was not just fighting North Vietnam, we were fighting China, we had no numerical advantage, no technological advantage, a disadvantage in hand to hand combat, a disadvantage in popular support, and a disadvantage in terms of espionage.
The only way to win in Vietnam would have been to attack Communist supply lines and leaders. The USA lost because we tried to fight a brute force war against a stategic enemy.
