: do you halsey was stupid to ignore the warnings
: of typhoons.
Saw him standing on the bridge of the Jersey on 17 dec 1944 while we were tryinb, unsucessfully, to refuel the Spense DD 512.
I wonder how many survivors of the Spense, Monahan, or the Hull atr still kicking around.
I do know that if the Skipper of the Tabberer DE 418 had not ignored orders to return to the fleet, because he was still finding survivors, I would not be here.
I was a GM striker , fresh out of service school and igned to the Spense on 9 Dec in Ulithi so my igned sea duty consisted of 9 days , which should be some jind of record. So I didn't know until a month or so ago that it had been screwed up that badly.
I do think that if he had allowed to keep tryng and we had gotten some fuel, we wouldn't have capsized..
I was on the marker line on the bow. we parted the fuel line and bumped a fender, so we were ordered off. I think he was afraid we would scratch the paint in his Flagship.
Anyway, its nice to know its still being talked about. And if any other survivors read this,,,Email me at siego@qwest.net
