: From 1966 to about 1970, Kim Il-sung of North Korea waged a low-intensity conflict against the ROK and the US forces stationed there. It was an attempt to subvert the democratic south by introducing a destabilizing element in the form of NK special forces which operated in the south and tried to rally the people to the communist cause. It failed.
: Most of the US casualties were in the 2nd and 7th infantry divisions, although there were some casualties in the US Army Support Group, which provided security for the Panmunjom area. There were no incidents that involved eight KIA US soldiers, however, on 2 Nov 66 six US soldiers from the 2ID were KIA in an ambush in the DMZ. The next largest group was 4 7ID soldiers KIA on 18 Oct 69.
