Ok, its simple. madison is saying that the factions dividing the US are deterring of the unity of the country and are destroying the liberty they fought so much for. He calls the factions a "disease" and says that the "cure" for the disease is a Republic. But then he contrasts a republic and a (pure) democracy. He says theat a republic "opens a different prospect, and promises the cure we are seeking." he also says that man isn't good enough to function under a true democracy.
It comes down to this: A pure democracy (like Athens) is ruled directly by the people with nothing to check the power of factions within a democracy.
A republic, especially under the constitution, solves these problems by using c and ballances, and representing EVERYONE.
