: Hello thinkers. : I recently happened upon Yeats' poem "The Two Trees" and so enjoy it I want to read it at a wedding. : I wonder if anyone knows any background or context on it. : I take it the "two trees" is probably a reference two the Greek myth of Baucis and Philemon (who were given any wish for welcoming Zeus and Hermes when they were disguised as beggars. the humble couple wished that one not outlive the other, so they were turned into two trees with intertwining branches). : so, the line "And how the winged sandals dart" must then refer to Hermes/Mercury. : but what does he mean by : "Remembering all that shaken hair"? : any guesses on other images, like "Flaming circle of our days?" : any help is appreciated. i will check the chat-room, but in case I am too spastic to find your post, can you CC it to my email address? : danielsaul@earthlink.net : Thank you!
