Hi Mario, X is still the narraor- he's just been so altered by his experience in the rainy, rainy war, that he isn't close enough anymore to his 'real' self to call himself "I"- his personality has been as shattered as the letters S-l-a-i-n. Esme stops time for him so he can reintegrate somewhat- a beautiful gift, deserving of the gift of a story in return.
