Zeus sent Hermes to rescue Io by killing Argus. Disguised as a country lad with a pipe of reeds, Hermes tried to bore him to sleep with various tales, but some of Argus' eyes always staid open. He finally succeeded with a story about Pan being in love with a nymph called Syrinx who was turned into a reed by her sister nymphs as he tried to catch her. (He then made her into a reed pipe). All of Argus’ eyes went to sleep and Hermes took this opportunity to kill him.
btw, my source spelt his name as Argus
