: Who is the Mr. Davenport mentioned as a carpenter/part Indian/living for a time at Monticello in 1790 as mentioned in Mr. Jefferson's Garden Book? Our 1815 Davenport House was built by Isaiah Davenport from Little Compton,Rhode Island. He was a master buidler by trade...His father had been one, also. This would be so interesting if Jefferson's carpenter is one and the same!
2ND REPLY TO MESSAGE:
There were several Davenport marriages in Albemarle County, ia on or about the 1790 period which may facilitate your research:
Charles Davenport married Nancy Davenport in 1802. Nancy was the daughter of RICHARD DAVENPORT, who gave his consent.
Jesse Davenport married Susannah Thompson in 1802
Martin Davenport married Milley Murrill in 1785. The bride wrote her own consent
William Davenport married Sally Harris Rodes in 1799.
My suggestion to you would be to go to the Land Patents and Grants of ia, which I believe are now accessible through Ancestry.com, and look for a Davenport with land either near to or adjoining that of Thomas Jefferson's extensive holdings.
You might consider hiring a ia genealogist to help with your riddle!
Good luck!
