9/03 I believe Jefferson is being hyperbolic rather than literal to underscore his belief. His belief was that informed citizenry is more important to freedom than any form of government. He's right, and to me it's clear and easily defended. The problem is that bullies have shown the will and ability to take over looser organizations, so there is an arguably vital function for central government. Of course, what we're seeing now in Iraq and Afghanistan is the opposite end of the spectrum, people showing their commitment to freedom against a well-organized military power. If we could get the Afghan and Iraqi fighters newspapers they could believe in, and get the American people newspapers that showed accurate understanding of opposing positions and have them pay attention and swallow fear and pride, we'd have peace. Like Jefferson, I too am unafraid to dream out loud. ;-) JK
