Hi all.
I've come across this quote lately and I'm having a hard time choosing sides. I desperately need someone else's point of view.
Ok, so here goes.
Thomas Jefferson (1887)
"Were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers, or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate to prefer the latter." Agree or disagree, and be prepared to defend your viewpoint.
My problem is that I really can't visualize how, first of all, one can exist without the other. The foremost function of newspapers is to "tell the news." There's also the occasional expose on government officials, u know, the behind the scenes look at whatever mess our highly paid elected officials are involved with on capitol hill. And that's why we need newspapers.
But then where would we be without a government?
Yes I believe that newspapers are extremely important, and I do happen to see Mr. Jefferson's point of view.
But "Newspapers without a government"...thats the part that I need help with. Can u give me the upside (or downside) to this? Where would we be without a government and how does that change the function of newspapers in any way?
Pls help asap. write me. thanx.
