Hi Stan,
For some reason, your name and memory flashed thru my head this a.m. and since I'm belatedly learning the computer, I tried Google and was pleasantly surprised to find you so remarkably well represented by so many websites.
I don't know if you will remember (I have an almost freakish memory, but ca. 1967 Russell Kirk suggested I say hello to you as I ped thru Indianapolis.
About your age,I recall your picking me up in the Star's editorial waiting room and escorting me back to the city room where you introduced me to a senior editor, saying, "This is Jim Barrett, a friend of Russell Kirk." The three-way chat lasted a few minutes, but that was it because shortly after I left the job that took me to your town.
Over the years, I've occasionlly seen how you were doing by a random references in this or that newspaper or magazine.
This is just a quick "Hi", and mainly-- congratulations! on your achievements as reflected in your set of web references. I'm very glad that you've gotten to sing your "song", your deep views on our beloved but parlous body social.
As for me, I'm semi-retired and am currently planning to start (!) in about two years to write my book on traditionally-oriented remedies for the zeitgeist's wounds from the standpoint of the perennial philosophy and Christian premises.
During a 10-year career in communications and 25 years as marriage and psychological counselor, I've kept deferring my nonreportorial public writing: out of what I felt was prudence, but other might call pusillanimity. I lost contact with Russell after I declined when he wanted me to answer a request someone had put to him for a conservatively-oriented college English instructor.
Lest I go on too long, let me close by saying I was struck by the web reference to your idea that the movement from medieval to modern doctrine can be demonstrated by only Roman Catholic (my main moral "language")spokesmen.
The malaise of our time is rooted in the loss of the intellectual authority of traditional Judeo-Christian doctrinal premises. In a word, the decline of the moral authority of the Bible virtues in our cultural heritage...so aulted by the philosophes and their heirs in the academy.
So, whether or not you remember our brief meeting of long ago, my hat's off to you Stan for what you have accomplished! I'll say a prayer for your continued good work.
Your humble servant (as Russell sometimes signed his letters!), Jim Barrett
P.S. Can you do my the favor of Replying this note back to me for my Outlook Express Inbox records. As a tyro on the computer, I tried to save this note to My Doents, but all that saved was your webpage with the Message box blank. So I had to re-write.
Perhaps you can supercript a line or two at the top of the Reply. Thanks. JB
