: The problem is always to find that point beyond which is all that is inexpressible (which presupposes belief in a realm that is inexpressible). The poem then becomes the lens through which the powers contained within the inexpressible might be brought back into the human, for our use. : As each moment in history differs from all others, presenting new crises and opportunities, the precise moment between the human and the inexpressible will always shift. The adjustment of poetry, to meet this new shifting, is what is meant by "progress" in poetry-or in any art. : If poetry is successful, the entire language (and with it, the human mind) is at once as broad and as precise as it can be during that particular historical moment.
