I live & work in PR China. I have since 2/27/00. The following is from my personal journal. Since this was written more persecution has taken place. The China government has launched an attack against the Catholic Church. The airwaves & newspapers are full of hate towards the church denouncing it as an enemy of the state. Yesterday (10/1, in Beijing 1000's where arrested. This was not of the Catholic Church or another Christian organization, but another religion that China fears. Since Congress has given permeate trade with China there is no longer any restraint upon her actions to suppress her people & us foreigners who live here. I hope this message gets home so that the American people will feel the shame of their actions.

The Olympic games have been on all week. All of China is watching. Each hotel has a special Olympic section. The Olympic tallies of how many Chinese Gold, Silver & Bronze metals are updated with each new metal. At the restaurants the games are on the TV’s. From the roar from the patrons & staff, I know that a new metal has been won for China. I have seen more Olympic Games this week than in my whole life. China is awaking as the WORLD not just as a power within the world. There is sense of nationalism, and unity that I do not think as prevailed since Hitler’s Germany. From all that I have learned of that aerie leading up to World War II, I see that same nationalistic pride & desire for territorial possession. Taiwan is China, Tibet is China, Mongolia is China, Singapore is China, and some of the Japanese Islands are China now the Panama Channel is China, and a few cities in the US are China. Where will it end? Or what will it lead to?
How many days has it been since the Senate gave China permanent trading status? Two? Three? Three at the maximum. Well today in the Hong Kong paper, I read that China has arrested 1000’s of Christians in a major crack down on the spread of this subversive religion. Many foreigners have also been arrested. Pray for your brothers (& me) over here. Yesterday the China government many it for Foreigners to again possess Christian literature, distribute Christian literature, and to discuss God or His Word with Chinese people. The paper said this is the most intrusive law ever written involving foreigners. It also said it was the most sweeping roundup of the church in over 20 years. I say this not to make those who love me afraid, my Jesus protects fools & children (and I am to old to be a child). I must trust in our Lord to protect me. I just want those of you who can read my words to understand what has happened when the United States does not stand up to tyranny. When our President & Congress are so easily bought by Governments hostile to our way of life, and money drives our values. As I write these words I do not know what will happen when I cross the border tomorrow. I do not know how I will find the church in Fuzhou or Shenyang. I do not know if any of this will have an effect on me personally. My friends, brothers & sisters I do know that there are members of our body who need your prayers.
