We conservatives have long been the strongest supporters of Israel. See Bill Bennett’s Op Ed piece on 10/1/01. Rush Limbaugh is also an avid supporter.
In this time of national tragedy we must finally realize that Israel is NOT our “best ally in the Middle East” – it is in fact our biggest liability in world affairs.
The time to debate the subtleties of who has "moral superiority" is over - American lives are at stake.
AMERICA'S INTEREST MUST COME FIRST FOR AMERICANS, NOT THE INTERESTS OF ISRAEL.
Israel’s supporters are reacting to this broad swell of public opinion with panic – typically: “What should we do, abandon Israel and let the Arabs push them back into the sea?” (A rabbi writing in the New York Times Magazine this past Sunday) This is silly and childish reaction completely removed from reality.
There is no need to abandon Israel, we can still be their ally, we just have to stop protecting them while they engage in ongoing subjugation of the Palestinians. Push them back into the sea? A ridiculous, panicky statement: Israel has the best equipped, trained and financed armed forces in the world outside of the U.S.
Finally we must realize that there is nothing that Sharon fears more than peace. If there is peace he will have to stop building new settlements (and remember that he was the inventor of the settlements policy – he drew the map of where every settlement would go over thirty years ago) and worse - he would have to stop “punishing” the Palestinians for their actions.
He has little interest in punishing them to stop the attacks: his real goal is to make life so unbearable for the Palestinians that they will “voluntarily” move away (many have left already). Just as millions “voluntarily” left what is now Israel (formerly Palestine). His real aim to to get rid of as many Palestinians as possible to make room for his stated goal of a "bigger Israel." Eretz Israel - a bigger Israel. Sounds a lot like lebensraum - heard that one before?
We supported Israel when they wanted a homeland - have we really stooped so far that we are prepared to say "Jews are superior - they deserve a homeland; Palestinians are an inferior people - they don't deserve one."
The time for debating the subtleties of whether the Jews or the Palestinians have "moral superiority" is over - American lives are at stake.
America is a target. The root cause of terrorism is America's blind submissive kowtowing to Israel's outrageous policies. Bin Laden has said so himself in published statements. Yes, he's a psychotic so he rants and raves about a lot of other things too, but this is the fundamental issue for Arabs and Muslims who resent America.
I have traveled widely in the Middle East and talked to the people in many places: from Tel Aviv to Palestinian refuge camps. If Israel would just leave the Palestinians alone to build a homeland for themselves, peace would follow. Yes, there may be a few lunatic fanatics who rant and rave about more, but are we to let them decide the fate of Americans?
When the U.S. asks Israel to do something: they ignore us entirely - it makes us look weak and submissive in the eyes of the world – especially the Arab world.
As long as we endorse the racist policies and state sponsored violence of Israel – there will be terrorist attacks on the U.S.
A final thought: on Friday after the World Trade Center attack, the Defense Minister of Israel said: “This [attack] has been a catastrophe for Arafat. Since Tuesday, we have killed 14 Palestinians and no one has even noticed.”
What arrogance that he feels free to speak so blandly of it - so openly, knowing that no one will try to stop him. A man is known by his friends – it is no different for nations.
Are we ready to spill more American blood so that Sharon can build more settlements and grab more land?
