maybe its all about the personification of the so called "good" and "bad". human beings want closure and tangible things hence the imaginary friend of a lonely child. maybe in an effort to deal with the unknown of our origin and what lies beyond death we (humans) settled on the God theory
and as long as there were enough resources to popularise the concept and enough respectable (elders, leaders...) people to like the idea, it caught on. witness the worldwide belief, once, that the world was flat.
