: ayn rand book atlas shrugged is the most over rated novel i have ever read. she is an elitist wanna be intellectual . not because she is a woman. i would like her to rewrite her book as a disenfranchised third world orphanded hiv positive child with grand parents suffering from alzheimers and i would hope that she she wrote her invective with the hand not cut off by maurding diamond thieves in sw africa. i have never read a work so filled with self righteous crap. i hate this woman...the world did,t lose much with her ping. i cant imagine a fate worse that ayn rand as care giver to humanities needy. what a selfish self centered waste.
If you think that then you really didn't understand the book. Forcing someone to sacrifice themselves for the common good is NOT moral!! Especially since the definition of the "common good" can (and is) warped to suit those in power.
She argues that noone be a slave to anyone else's needs, everyone is responsible for themselves and you are neither owned anything, nor owe anything to anybody.
As for the poor orphanded hiv positive child in africa... Ayn Rand does not argue against charity. You are free to use your skills, time, and money to help those poor children. However the choice to do so must belong to each individual, and not forced through taxation under the threat of loss of freedom for noncompliance.
