We're too quick to pat ourselves on the back for bringing these people on to the lowest rung of the global economic ladder, complete with the ever growing problems of anxiety, obesity, addiction and depression. Contrary to Western mythology, Africa and other developing areas of the world were not starving in the pre-colonial era, though it has often been so since. There is plenty to suggest that people lived richer fuller lives in traditional societies. There is more to live than GDP statistics.
And before you suggest that anyone check their premises, you'd better be mightily certain of your own.
