Have you realized that Sunday December 31st 2001 will be the centenary of Hardy's poem 'The Darkling Thrush'. Its relevance, since its theme is a backward look at the century, is obvious, and it is still as appropriate today. It has a good claim to be among hus best ten poems, if not the best.
