: I am a translator from Czech to English. I am currently translating an architectural article in which the writer refers to one anecdote about Pope and then quotes two lines of a poem. These have obviously been translated into Czech and so unless I can find the original all I can do is : translate them back into my own English words, which would be silly and wrong, especially in relation to the poem. So please. Could anyone identify Pope's original words which literally translated back from the Czech are as follows: : 1. An aristocrat invited Pope to see his grand new mansion, Pope observed that "If I were in your place I would build a little brick villa beside the new place, which would have big windows through which I could admire the beauty..." : 2. A verse quote also on architecture, which : literally translates back as : "Esteemed lord, this is a beauty : on which the eye gazes, but you couldn't eat and live in it." : If someone could come up with the originals, I : would be eternally grateful. : Anna
