: I need to compare the philosophy of landscape painting with the descriptions in Irving's stories. Know any great sites, or ideas??
Wow sounds like a fun subject! I don't know of sites but I do know that Irving wanted to be a landscape painter if he would have chosen being an artist over writing (that was written about in The Life and Letters of W. Irving by Pierre Munro Irving). And also his goal was to write what he saw, which is why he writes about landscaping in such detail, he spent a lot of time riding in carriages! I would think a great place to start would be biographies of Irving (there aren't any in depth sites but the libraries tend to have some good stuff), and then maybe get some books on romantic painting in the 1800s or landscape painting at around that time period. He closely parelleled the objective of most landscape artists with his writing.. and I can't help but wonder what he would have produced if he had taken up painting along with writing stories. I guess we'll never know :-(
