This advice is extremely belated, I'm sorry. In truth, the Legend of Sleepy Hollow wasn't all the way influenced by New England (except for the area in which the story was placed in). He actually used old German folktales for both Sleepy Hollow and Rip Van Winkle. He would often place his own characters and settings in folktales from other countries, specifically Germany and Spain. I know this is probably far too late for you, I didn't know of any books that talked about New England Legend..
