i disagree. i believe the message is that the heroine's attitude indicates her moral superiority over the rich friends she visits as indicated throughout the novel by the turn of events indicating the traditional triumph of good (i.e., old-fashioned virtues) over modern attitudes of bad manners and selfishness (as exemplified by Tom's humbling and reformation).
