There is actually a wide range of social issues that are discussed in the book...many which few no of due to their omittance in the movie. For example, The yellow brick road may have been representative of "The gold standard". The slippers were orignally silver, not ruby red, and are thought to stand for Silver coins. Dorothy symbolizes Uncle Sam. Eastern workers were the tin man, and midwestern farmers composed the carecrow. The banker bosses were the wicked witch of the east, the railroad tycoons that of the East.
