I am still looking for the source of Mary Howitt's "The Spider and the Fly". I think it is merely a German, Germanic, or at least Northern European folk tale. Howitt was proficient in such languages. I came across a similar tale used as a Marxist parable around the turn of the century--it got rather vampiric, as the spider (capitalism) ed the blood of innocent proles. Still, the author cites this story as an old tale. Does this ring a bell with anybody?
